The new community at Marston Vale will be a truly sustainable development, where the land uses, public spaces and transport systems are integrated to achieve local travel patterns for most day to day purposes. It will also provide convenient connections to non car modes of transport for longer distance movement, making sustainable travel the logical choice for journeys beyond the conurbation. This philosophy will permeate all facets of life at Marston Vale, including journeys for personal and business purposes, and the supply chains that support daily life in the Vale.
The primary objectives of the Transport Strategy are:
- To minimise car use and journey length – e.g. 50% reduction in car trip rates
- To reduce pollution from transport – e.g. 50% reduction in CO2 emissions
- To encourage healthy living – e.g. 4 fold increase in walking and cycling
The Transport Strategy will also:
- plan for a community that will need to adapt to changing economic, social and environmental conditions as a result of climate change
- promote local sustainable transport solutions in the Marston Vale providing the basis for achieving local movement patterns and supporting the social and economic wellbeing of the community
- encourage sustainable patterns of connectivity and travel between the Marston Vale, Bedford, Milton Keynes and beyond.
- encourage the use of ICT as an alternative to travel
- encourage the development of sustainable supply chains for construction materials, waste and recyclates, and retail goods.
promote local, low carbon fuel solutions for local transport operations
promote social equity by providing equal access for all, and by providing a safe and secure transport system
